Olin TRIBUTE TO VOLUNTEERS Eight years ago Don Hayes was afraid to get up in front of a group. Today he is leading a state-wide drive in North Carolina to collect $500,000 for the American Cancer Society — a volunteer job that requires him to address Jaycee chapters all over the state. Shaping Of A Leader Against Cancer “What has happened to me is really what Jaycees is all about,” says Don, a tester in Ecusta’s Quality Control Department. “Jaycees is not a civic organization and it’s not a social club. It’s an organization to train peo ple 18 to 35 years old on how to be leaders. We then use our leadership training to support such charities as a boys home, a burn center, cystic fi brosis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, leukemia and cancer.” Don went to his first Jaycee meet ing with no intention of joining. “I’m not a clubby person,” Don explained, “but at that first meeting I found myself speaking up and giving my opinion. I liked the fact that people respected my ideas and listened respectfully to what I had to say.” Don joined the local Jaycees and was impressed with such community efforts as Christmas House. Working with local social services organiza tions and using the profits from sell ing Christmas trees, the Jaycees do nate over $5,000 to buy food and gifts for 200 needy families. Don steadily moved up through the local Jaycee organization. He held every officer position including presi dent and then became state district director for Western North Carolina. “Over those years I have been able to learn and test such leadership skills as organization, long range planning and evaluation of manpower,” commented Don. “My writing and speaking skills have greatly improved.” Don’s leadership qualities were re cognized this year when he was ap pointed State Program Director for the Jaycees fund drive for the Ameri can Cancer Society. Don's confidence in his own skills was evident when he directed the Brevard area’s first Jail- A-Thon to collect money for the Cancer Society. Don was told that $4,000 was a rea listic goal. Instead, Don set the goal at $10,000 and enlisted strong sup port from the police, the radio station and city officials. As a result of the effort the local Jaycees raised $18,500 — all of which went directly to the American Cancer Society. Don has spent most of his spare time this year working to achieve this same kind of success at Jaycee fund Don Hayes directs from his home a state wide drive for the American Cancer Society that will collect over a half million dollars for cancer research. raisings across the state. The job in volves a lot of phone calls, preparing a newsletter and travel. Olin has un derwritten much of his phone, post age and printing expenses. “Next year will be my last year in Jaycees,” Don concluded, “but I’m looking forward to finding new ways to apply my experience and skills to help my community, my employer and my family.” O Stretch Your Christmas Budget At Employee Store The Pisgah Forest employee store is a great place to save money and time in completing your Christmas gift list.
